‘Himalayan Ecological Research Institute for Training and Grassroots Enhancement’ (Heritage) Uttarakhand has been established with the inspiration of conservation and promotion of culture, ecology, folk arts, folk traditions and folk heritage of Himalayan states. The basic spirit and concept of the institute is the holistic and sustainable development of the Himalayan mountainous regions.

The institute has been established as a tribute to Late Beena Paliwal ji by her family. All the work done by the institute for the preservation of the heritage of the Himalayan region including Uttarakhand is dedicated to Late Beena Paliwal ji. Late Beena Paliwal ji, who came out of a small rural town Gunaditya located in Dhauladevi block of Almora district of Uttarakhand, dedicated her whole life to bring her family to a higher educational level. Late Beena Paliwal ji remained very conscious about the importance of education, despite coming from mountain villages where there are neither enough resources nor opportunities for higher education even today. She never left any stone unturned to provide opportunities and resources for better education to her children. As a result, her entire family is discharging important responsibility in giving a new direction to the society with remarkable contribution in the academic field today.

Late Beena Paliwal ji not only considered education as a means of social change, but also took full care that her family should always be connected to the roots of the traditional mountain heritage of Uttarakhand. Mountains, villages, forests, water used to be included in her conversation, she also had deep knowledge of mountain folk songs, folk music and traditions. The awareness that she created in her family, in her children about the traditions of the mountain, is in front of you today in the form of HERITAGE.

Through Heritage, the entire family of Late Beena Paliwal ji is taking steps towards more actively putting her thoughts on the ground towards Himalayas, Himalayan traditions, Himalayan ecology, Himalayan concerns. In fulfilling this goal, the Paliwal family has also got the support of experts dedicated to the conservation and promotion of the Himalayas. We have full hope that together we will discharge our responsibilities in a holistic manner towards the protection of the Himalayas and its folk traditions.
